Bebe Bonita VFX

The music video for the song Bebe Bonita by Chino & Nacho Feat. Jay Sean was released last month. It features a sci-fi storyline with a number of visual effects, all of which were done by yours truly. Whether or not you’re a Spanish speaker or like this genre of music, you can’t argue with over 6 million views!

There were a couple of full-cg space shots which were done with a combination of Lightwave 3D and After Effects, but the majority of the work involved creating Terminator-style effects for the title character – a mysterious girl from another world, played by Annie Helvey.

In many shots her eyes required special 3D-animated treatment. They had a glow and a mechanical texture which moved to give iris the appearance of scanning the environment.

For point-of-view shots, heavily-processed live-action ARRI ALEXA footage was supplemented with CG interface elements and images, showing a view of augmented reality.

In addition to these obvious visual effects there were also several invisible ones. For example, the cross-promoted Ford Fiesta, heavily featured throughout the video, needed detailed logo replacements in every single shot to make the brand more clearly visible. Making this look real in dynamic shots with lots of movement, lighting changes and parallax presented a real challenge.

Perhaps the most complex visual effect was the girl’s meteor-like landing at the beginning of the video. To film the necessary plate which would later be populated with massive particle effects, I actually had to run into frame and set off a series of flashes for interactive lighting, before the actress took the mark and began her performance.

It was an intense amount of work on a very short deadline, but I thoroughly enjoyed this project.

Quit Y’er Pitching

“A picture is worth a thousand words,” say people who cant’s write. I say, a moving picture is worth a thousand still pictures. And by the transitive property, that’s like, a million words!

Sometimes to help clients visualize what their project will look, sound and feel like, I create animated storyboards such as this. It can be done surprisingly fast. It took me about 20 minutes to draw the simple thumbnail panels using the ace speed-storyboarding advice found here: https://vimeo.com/22552454.

On another day, I recorded the audio of the whole spot, which became the basis for the timing. I just “acted” all the parts into the mic, then quickly mixed it all with some sound effects and a background track from SmartSound. This took about half-an hour.

After scanning the storyboard sheets and cropping them into individual Photoshop images, I split the elements of some panels into separate layers, so they could be animated in After Effects. That final assembly and light animation took a couple of hours, but at the end of it, you have an accurate representation of the entire project!

I Like to Map it Map it

An ad campaign produced by Mad Crazy Productions, promoting a GPS device needed some 3D animation for a series of instructional videos about how to use it.

I constructed a complete model of the device (inside and out), as well as the packaging, based on a physical prototype and some concept images. These were animated along with a multitude of text supers and other 2D elements. The result is over 10 minutes of animated explanation of every aspect of the product, in English and Spanish.

In addition to the animation, 2 of the television spots for the product needed visual effects enhancements and invisible corrections. You’ll never spot them…

Short Shift

I worked on an independent feature film in October, providing services as jib/Steadicam operator and helping out as grip. But after the first couple of days of shooting, the production experienced major logistical issues and had to relocate out of state.

A brief adventure, but interesting. My first experience with the Red Epic.

Captain Disillusion on DVD!

My slightly acclaimed web series about critical thinking – Captain Disillusion – is free to download on YouTube and iTunes and will remain that way. To help that along, I’ve put together a feature-packed collection DVD. It premiered at the Amazing Meeting 9 in Las Vegas in July and was well-received. Above is the promo that ran leading up to the conference.

But the part about exclusivity is no longer true. Now the DVD is available for purchase here!

Please consider buying a copy to support the continuing production and help spread a bit of common sense and healthy skepticism into the world :)

PS: The DVD also marks the first IMDb-listed production for Amelik Entertainment as an entity. Woot.
